About 5 minutes Quick win
1

Try DeepL in your browser

2 minutes

Go to deepl.com and paste some text you want to translate. Choose the source and target languages. Compare the result with Google Translate side by side — DeepL consistently produces more natural, fluent translations for European languages. It handles idioms, formal/informal registers (tu vs vous, du vs Sie), and context better than any other translator.

What you should see

A natural-sounding translation. Try a paragraph with nuance — notice how DeepL handles tone and context.

2

Install the browser extension

2 minutes

Go to deepl.com/app and click "Download the browser extension". Available for Firefox, Chrome, Brave, Vivaldi, and Edge. Once installed, select any text on any webpage, and a small DeepL icon appears — click it to translate instantly without leaving the page. You can also translate entire web pages by clicking the extension icon in your toolbar.

Visit a foreign-language website. Select a paragraph of text — the DeepL popup appears with a translation.
3

Install desktop and mobile apps

3 minutes

Download the DeepL desktop app from deepl.com/app (Windows and Mac). On your phone, get it from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android). The desktop app has a powerful shortcut: select text in any application and press Ctrl+C twice (or Cmd+C twice on Mac) to instantly translate it. This works in emails, documents, chat apps — anywhere you can select text.

What you should see

Select text in any app and double-tap Ctrl+C. A DeepL popup appears with the translation. On your phone, the app translates text you type or paste.

4

Try document translation

2 minutes

On deepl.com, click the "Translate files" tab. Upload a PDF, Word, or PowerPoint document. DeepL translates the entire document while preserving formatting — headers, bullet points, tables all stay intact. The free tier allows 3 document translations per month. This is particularly useful for official documents, contracts, or reports in another language.

What you should see

A translated document downloads with formatting intact. Compare it to the original to check quality.

Troubleshooting

DeepL does not support my language
DeepL supports 30+ languages but focuses on European languages. For Asian languages (Chinese, Japanese, Korean), DeepL has added support but Google Translate may still be more accurate. For African languages and many smaller languages, Google Translate remains the only option. Use DeepL where it excels and Google where it has to.
Free tier character limit
The free tier translates up to 5,000 characters at a time and 3 documents per month. For most personal use, this is enough. If you need more, DeepL Pro starts at a few euros per month with unlimited text translation and more document translations.
The browser extension does not work on some sites
Some websites block browser extensions or use content that the extension cannot access (like text inside images). In these cases, copy the text manually and paste it into the DeepL app or website. The desktop Ctrl+C+C shortcut works in more contexts than the browser extension.
