End-to-end encrypted file storage. Files and metadata encrypted on your device before upload. Swiss jurisdiction. Part of the Proton ecosystem.
If you already have a Proton Mail account, Proton Drive is included — go to drive.proton.me and log in. If not, create a free account at proton.me. The free plan includes 5GB of combined storage across Mail and Drive. Proton Drive encrypts every file client-side before upload — Proton staff cannot see your files.
The Proton Drive web interface shows an empty "My files" folder. Your storage quota is visible in the sidebar.
Download the Proton Drive app from proton.me/drive/download. Available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. On your phone, download from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android). Log in on all devices. The desktop app creates a sync folder on your computer — files you put there are automatically encrypted and uploaded.
A "Proton Drive" folder appears on your computer. Files placed in it sync automatically. The mobile app shows the same files.
Go to takeout.google.com. Click "Deselect all", then check only "Drive". Click "Next step", choose "Send download link via email" and ".zip" format. Click "Create export". Google will prepare your files and email you a download link (this can take hours for large accounts). Download and unzip the file. Google Docs will be converted to Microsoft Office format (.docx, .xlsx).
A folder on your computer containing all your Google Drive files. Open a few documents to confirm they are intact.
Drag the exported folders into your Proton Drive sync folder, or upload via the web interface at drive.proton.me. Create a folder structure that makes sense — Documents, Photos, Work, etc. Each file is encrypted before upload. Upload speed depends on your internet connection and the total size. Start with your most important files if you have limited storage on the free plan.
Files appear in Proton Drive web and mobile app. Open a document to confirm it is readable.
Right-click any file or folder and select "Share". Proton creates an encrypted sharing link. You can set an expiration date and password for the link. Recipients do not need a Proton account to access shared files — the link works in any browser. For ongoing collaboration, note that Proton Drive does not have real-time document editing like Google Docs. For that, use OnlyOffice or LibreOffice.
A sharing link is created. Open it in a private browser window to confirm the file is accessible.
