Google Search → Startpage

Same Google results, zero tracking. Netherlands-based under GDPR. The easiest sovereignty win — takes 5 minutes.

About 5 minutes Quick win
1

Try Startpage first

2 minutes

Open your browser and go to startpage.com. Search for something you normally search for. Notice the results are identical to Google — because Startpage proxies Google's index. The difference: Startpage strips your IP address and personal data before sending the query. Google never knows it was you.

What you should see

High-quality search results that look familiar. An "Anonymous View" link next to each result for extra privacy.

2

Set Startpage as your default search engine

2 minutes

In Firefox: Menu → Settings → Search → Default Search Engine → select Startpage (or add it via startpage.com/install). In Brave or Vivaldi: Settings → Search engine → select Startpage from the dropdown. In Chrome: Settings → Search engine → Manage search engines → add Startpage with URL https://www.startpage.com/do/dsearch?query=%s and set as default.

What you should see

Type a search in your address bar, press Enter. You land on startpage.com, not google.com.

3

Set up on your phone

2 minutes

On iPhone: Settings → Safari → Search Engine — Startpage may not be listed, so use the Startpage app or bookmark startpage.com to your home screen. On Android with Firefox: Settings → Search → Default search engine → Startpage. On Android with Brave: Settings → Search engines → Startpage. The Startpage Privacy Browser app is also available on both platforms.

What you should see

Search from your phone browser or the Startpage app delivers results without tracking.

Troubleshooting

Results seem slightly different from Google
Google personalises results based on your history. Startpage shows unbiased results — what everyone sees. This is a feature, not a bug. You get less of a filter bubble.
Startpage is not listed in my browser's search engine options
Visit startpage.com/install for browser-specific instructions. Most browsers let you add a custom search engine manually using the URL pattern: https://www.startpage.com/do/dsearch?query=%s
Some searches return fewer results
Startpage filters some Google features like Knowledge Panels and Shopping results. For those specific searches, you can always go directly to a specialist site. For 95% of searches, Startpage gives you everything you need.
